Live opera is a more accessible, enjoyable experience than ever before. The passion and power of opera can only be fully experienced in a live, theater setting. However, first-time opera goers may be unsure of how to get the most out of their first visit. Here are a few tips from Spokane Opera to make sure your first opera experience is as enjoyable as possible.

  • Dress comfortably. Wear what you like, be it casual or evening wear. Attending opera is about your experience.
  • Use the Fox Theater Box Office. Buying your ticket at the box office is the easiest way to get a ticket and pick a good seat.
  • Following the plot is easy. Most opera plots (or, librettos) are simple stories. Revenge, betrayal, murder, or heroic and undying love. Spokane Opera provides an English translation projected above the stage for foreign-language operas. Google the name of the opera, or visit our blog, if you want to get even more familiar with the plot before attending.
  • Arrive 15 minutes early. Opera performances start on time and late-comers are not let in until a break or intermission. Have time to find your seat and read the plot in the program notes.
  • Enjoy with company, and make a night of it. Opera is always more enjoyable with friends (give them this guide if they are nervous), and the Fox Theater is located in the heart of Downtown Spokane. Enjoy a desert at the Fox Theater or one of many restaurants in walking distance.
  • Food and drink during the production are available before and during the intermission in the Fox Theater lobby.
